Our textbook does a great job to discuss the disparity
found among health and illness around the world. They
determined that infectious diseases are most common in
industrialized societies and that behaviours associated
with modernization and industrialization and the unequal
distribution of wealth (think back to Richard Wilkinson’s
Ted Talk) work to create and spread contagious disease
(if you haven’t yet had a chance, read Question 3.4 in
our text). From the last section of the chapter, the
authors draw out the importance of problem-solving from
the ground up, which understands issues from the
perspective of those experiencing them and to approach
such projects using a holistic, and historic, approach. This
approach asks that we prioritize the voices of those most
affected by the event or situation and to recognize that
some individual’s and group voices have long gone under
represented and unheard. This introduces us to a term
called multivocality. This term was originally coined by
Victor Turner who you met in this chapter. Turner studied
the meanings of ritual symbols and defined multivocality
to indicate that one symbol may stand for many things.
More recently, Robert Mizzi (2010, 2) defines it as “the
plural and sometimes contradictory narrative voices”
which he locates within the researcher themselves.
However, multivocality is a term more often used to
describe the various perspectives that ethnographers
encounter in the field and when receiving multiple
