The Concept of Culture
CULTURE: The system of meanings about the nature of
experience that are shared by a people and passed on
from one generation to another, including the meanings
that people give to things, events, activities and people
(Robbins, Cummings, and McGarry 2017, 9 ).
According to Potts (1996, 197 as cited in Schultz,
Lavenda and Dods 2012, 14-15), the modern human
capacity for culture did not appear all at once; rather,
various pieces were added at different times in our
evolutionary past as far back perhaps, as our primate
ancestors who used tools or developed techniques to gain
access to food and water. Below are the eight elements
that, according to Potts, create the foundation of, and
capacity for, culture as a species:
