Field based
Brewer (2000) defines the field as "a naturally occurring setting"
(as cited by O'Reilly 2012, 23), examples of which include school,
a neighbourhood, or hockey arena. Anthropologists use
ethnographic methods (see Lesson 2) to conduct research and in
so doing, anthropologists themselves are often the tool used for
data collection. This means that anthropologists must be in the
field, what is often called in situ, meaning "in place" or "on site"
in order to conduct their research. Again, more on that in Module
