Benefits and Challenges of
Community Engagement
Building Positive and Healthy
Communities
The success of building positive and healthy
communities depends on bringing people together
through the establishment and maintenance of
long-term relationships. There are many benefits
and challenges associated with engaging in
community. These benefits and challenges can be
both individual and the community-oriented (e.g.,
government, stakeholders).
There are many players involved in a “community.”
For example, a community is comprised of
individual members such as students, parents,
grandparents, educators, health professionals etc.
Other stakeholders in a community may also
include agencies and organizations within the
community. Institutions are also part of the
community, including universities and the
government. All of these players benefit from a
sense of community, and must work together to
ensure a prosperous and strong society.
