Personality disorders are essentially maladaptive personality traits (often rigid and inflexible) Personality traits: characteristic features displayed persistently over time/across situations. Show a more restricted range of personality traits or exhibit a single dominant trait (monolithic) Traits are inflexible/maladaptive + cause significant impairment or subjective distress. Essential feature = enduring pattern of inner experience and behaviour that deviates from expectations of the culture + manifested in at least 2 of the following areas: cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning, impulse control. Dsm-5 lists 10 disorders grouped into 3 clusters based on descriptive similarities: Cluster a - odd and eccentric disorders: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal. Cluster b - dramatic, emotional/erratic disorders: antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic. Cluster c - anxious and fearful disorders: avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive. Individuals frequently present w comorbid disorders from different clusters. Those w cluster b disorders are the most likely to seek treatment.
