Two fundamental meanings of justice: criminal justice, punishment is a just retaliation for harm. We want people who harm other people to be punished: psychology of cj: we want retaliation. We want revenge: we cannot take justice into our hands, it would be chaos, revenge (vengeance) two forms of revenge, unrestricted return the harm plus more. Oldest type of revenge: restricted: lex talions (law of retaliation) latin/ roman word. Measure for measure: laws of vengeance have become more civilized. However, the fundamental meaning has stayed the same: order / deterrence people do not go around harming each other because they are dethroned.
