Document Summary

Edwin hubble"s determination of ho was too large and recent measurements of it produce a value somewhere around 70 km/sec/ megaparsec (1 parsec = 3. 26 ly). In this one instance we use the distance unit of parsecs (megaparsecs actually) because hubble"s constant is always measured this way. Above we talked about the redshifting of light from galaxies due to doppler shifting. Although the effect produces the same result we now believe that the redshifting of light from distant galaxies is due to the expansion of space itself between that distant galaxy and us and not due to doppler shifting. I told you this course would stretch your mind. More about this later, in the meantime i"ll just let that thought percolate in your mind. For a pictorial representation of all of this see below: More detailed information about all of this can be found at the following university of nebraska-lincoln website.
