Document Summary

Lesson 11: the big bang theory and experimental support. A number of very significant ideas are presented here and you may well have to read these notes and the corresponding textbook material several times to grasp their understanding. In the last lesson you were introduced to the big bang theory. We begin this lesson by investigating three pieces of experimental evidence supporting the big bang theory. You are reminded that any theory worth considering must make predictions that can be tested; otherwise, the theory really isn"t worth much. Once the predictions are tested the theory either becomes more believable or, based on the experimental evidence, the theory gets adjusted. This is, more or less, what science is all about. One piece of evidence supporting the big bang theory is the discovery of the cosmic background radiation (cmb) and you will learn that the cmb has become a cornerstone of modern cosmology.
