Document Summary

Definition a docile body is a body that may be subjected, used, transformed and improved . It can be achieved through a strict regime of disciplinary acts. Anyone that has internalized the surveillance of another higher disciplinary power and as a result has transformed themselves. The higher power would agree that the docile body is an improved version of the original. Examples: specific disciplinary practices produce a body in which gesture and appearance is recognizably feminine, massiveness and power in a woman"s body seems to always be met with distaste. Dieting becomes the way to meet the body standard . They often punish themselves for their failure to conform. Shame and secrecy is engrained in men, while a lot of self-blame occurs in men who do not conform/comply w/ the idea of hegemonic masculinity. Boys and men continually challenge each other to prove that they"re in the box.
