Document Summary

Reading gender stereotyping in the english language by laurel richardson. Definition gender stereotyping occurs in the english language in 6 different ways: women are a part of men. The generic term man leads to a visualization of men- women are excluded in the imagination: pronouns reflect different personality attributes and career aspirations for men and women. For example, men are doctors and women are nurses: language constructs women as immature and incompetent; men as mature and competent. We demonstrate infantilizing by referring to women as girls, but not referring to men as boys: women are defined in terms of their sexual desirability to men; men in terms of their sexual prowess over women. For example, women"s identities are based upon marriage. Accomplishments are secondary to their relationships w/ men: neutral words acquire different meaning over time: more obscene meanings for women. Language changes overtime to acquire more negative or derogatory meanings (i. e. slut).
