Document Summary

Critically evaluate the fbi (clinical) approach and the british (statistical) approach to offending profiling. Profiling is an extremely fascinating but also much debated discipline. On one hand, there is the fbi that approaches offender profiling as an art; on the other hand there is the british approach who sees the discipline as a science. Starting from this assumption this report will firstly introduce the fbi approach - born in the us, in quantico, virginia, in the late 1970s - which is a mainly deductive approach. Thus, it is based on intuition and on a bottom-up methodology, which analyse single cases to create typologies. Secondly, this report will illustrate the statistical british approach, which was first used in the 1980s. This latter method is associated with david canter and his investigative psychology, whose approach is much more based on statistics, quantitative data and averages, and it is therefore a top- down approach.
