In order to get to the point where you may develop your own theory academically or use theory to explain various social phenomena, you have to recognize where we have come from. We want to take time to really examine the process by which a person, behaviour or characteristic is deviantized. This process begins with: description: the label or the category, evaluation: the judgement or assumptions, prescription: the social control of this deviance. Durkhei(cid:373)"s theory of a(cid:374)o(cid:373)ie emile durkheim is considered to be one of the founders of the discipline of sociology. He created a substantial body of work, and within that work addressed deviance in two different ways: first, he suggested that a certain level of deviance is functional for society, helping to maintain social order. A certain level of deviance does the following: It increases social solidarity by motivating people to join together to fight back against those people who break the rules (e. g. neighbourhood watch groups).
