Chapter 12: sampling: sampling is done in both quantitative and qualitative research, sampling refers to the selection of individuals and other units of analysis for research. Sampling related error: sources of bias: not using a random method to pick the sample- if not used the selection process will be affected by human judgement. Sampling error: the possibility of sampling error can never be completely eliminated. Even with a probability sample, sampling error can still occur. However probability sample stands a better chance a minimizing sampling error then non-probability sample. Comparing the two: probability sample-preferred in most research, based on probability theory, sampling frame, randomization, more likely to be representative, can calculate sampling error, can draw valid generalizations from our sample to our population. Compared to non-prob which is all the opposite and is preferred in pilot studies. In most types of prob. sampling, each unit has the same chance of being sampled.
