How learning to read functionally and structurally alters the brain. Reading is a learned skill influenced by experience, as well as brain maturation, and is specific to humans (houston, et al. , 2014). In other words, individuals are not born with the ability to read fluently, they are taught through training and practice. Past studies have demonstrated that skilled reading relies on the integration of multiple brain regions and that overtime the communication between them strengthens (houston, et al. , 2014). Gabrieli, (2009) accordingly predicted that the lack of practice could impede growth of reading skill and the acquisition of vocabulary and world knowledge. To study impaired readers, researchers mainly select participants with a developmental learning disability known as, dyslexia. According to studies conducted by krafnick, et al. , (2011) and. Raschle, et al. , (2011) developmental dyslexia is a neuro-biologically based learning disability characterized by difficulty with word decoding, word recognition, and spelling that affects 5-17% of all school-aged children.
