Light detection is altered based on the context (the colour of the background). The same image can look different under different circumstances. The brain has mechanisms that associate patterns with behavioural meanings. We do not see the world exactly the way it is; we see it in a way that is adaptive in a way that makes it more likely that we will survive to reproduce. Perception is about how one thing looks or sounds in the context of its surrounding environment. Ted talk 2 achromotopsia cannot see colour and does not know what colour looks like because the world is always in a greyscale. He had a device made that lets him hear colours. He began to dream in colour and felt that it became a part of his body. After he had used the device he began to associate the sounds with certain colours, so when he hears a voice he will experience a colour synesthesia.
