Methods of traditional psychophysics (the scientific investigation of the relationship between sensation and stimulus) and experimental psychology: mid 1970s: Incorporated evidence form neuropsychology and animal neurophysiology and imaging techniques. Foundational to all of cognitive psychology is the idea that the world contains information that is available for humans to process. Every event that occurs in a situation with two equally likely outcomes provides one bit of information. Hyman: it takes longer to react to an improbable stimulus, which conveys more information, than to a probable one, which conveys less information. Webster and thompson: dichotic listening: people deal with overload of their capacity to process information by attending to only some of the available signal information. Filter model: a theory based on the idea that information processing is restricted by channel capacity. Channel capacity: the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted by an information processing device.
