Circadian rhythms (ex. sleep/wake cycle): a biological rhythm with a period of about 24 hours. Rhythms occurring less often than 24 hrs (ex. Birds migrating south in the fall, bears hibernate in the winter, female menstrual cycle, etc. Rhythms occurring more than once in 24 hours (ex. Physiological changes during sleep,stomach contractions, hormonal levels, etc. ) Some effects of biorhythms on our functioning. Melatonin therapy used to treat insomnia and synchronize the disturbed sleep- wake cycle of blind people (mixed results though ) Circadian rhythms can be affected by illness, stress, fatigue, excitement, drugs, mealtimes/diet and daily experiences. Sad affecting our mood in certain seasons (ex. Menstrual cycle do have physical symptoms (ex. Cramps, breast tenderness, etc) that could make women grumpy.
