Theories drive research - gain further knowledge of social world. Inductive: ndings/observations -> theory we note the ndings- the develop the theory. Deductive: theory-> ndings/observations have a theory- then test that theory and develop the ndings. What can be known and how knowledge is acquired. Debate between what is acceptable knowledge in social sciences and natural sciences. Positivist -what can be seen or heard (empirical testing) Derived from induction and deduction- no real preference given. Researchers of different values- reach similar conclusions. Goal of positivist research is to avoid normative statements.
