Why do we sometimes choose pain over pleasure: contrariness or spite, pleasure from wallowing in pain, experiencing pain causes self-awareness and vitality. The more civilized and scientific we have become, the more violent and bloodthirsty we are. Even higher than reason and pleasure to us is individuality: exercising our freedom, our most treasured possession = our individuality , most advantageous advantage , free unrestrained choice. Reason is a good thing, but desire is what drives our life. We have lost touch with our life and cannot bear to be reminded of it underground man. Main point: we should rein in our freedom because we cannot control it. When given freedom, all that results are cruelty and starvation. People will always choose bodily pleasures over spiritual ones. #1: the aesthetic stage: temporal > eternal, different approaches to life; not devoted to just one, takes one of the following as their highest good, physical pleasure.
