Philosophy 1350g: reality and what we can know of it. In addition to the concepts and arguments listed in the midterm study guide, you will be responsible for knowing the following: Mind-body problem: the mind is influenced by what happens to the body (ex. I feel pain when i hit my thumb with a hammer). Mind-brain problem: the state"s of one"s mind is heavily influenced, if not completely determined by, the state of one"s brain. Perceptions, memories, and emotions can be produced via the electrical stipulation of certain regions in the brain. Turiya: the ultimate self must be grasped in a spiritual state rather than a mental state. When in turiya, we achieve total self-consciousness the division between subject and object dissolves. In this way we transcend thought and perception, thereby coming to know not only our ultimate selves, but our ultimate reality. (hinduism).
