Impact of sbar on nurse shift reports and staff rounding. Sbar was used to improve shift reports and interdisciplinary rounding. Sbar was developed to improve nurse-physician communication, but its use in nurse-nurse communication has been advocated. After a study, they found that the baseline time to complete reports (pre-sbar) was 53 minutes, significantly longer than the 2 experimental conditions of 45. 1 (paper sbar) and 38. 1 minutes (electronic sbar). Patient reviews were more consistent and significantly shorter post- Sbar enabled more focused and consistent shift reports, and fostered dialog between nurses. For interdisciplinary rounds, it significantly reduced patient review times and enabled new nurses to present like experienced ones. Its use is recommended to improve nurse-nurse communication, and reduce the time spent on nonpertinent activities and information during shift reports and rounds. This is important because lack of communication can result in loss of life. In 2006, they found that 65% of sentinel events were the result of communication problems.
