Document Summary

There are 5 main types of blood vessels: arteries carry blood away from the heart, to other tissues and organs. Large, elastic arteries leave the heart and eventually turn into medium-sized muscular arteries. These then become small arteries, and eventually arterioles. These are the vessels to branch into capillaries, those that allow gas and nutrient exchange between blood and tissue. Groups of capillaries within a tissue reunite to form small veins called venules. These merge to form progressively larger blood vessels called veins. Veins are the blood vessels that convey blood from the tissue back to the heart. It contributes minimally to the thickness of the vessel wall, and its innermost layer is called the endothelium. The second component of the tunica interna is the basement membrane, deep to the endothelium. It provides a physical support base for the overlying epithelial layer.
