Chapter 1-intro to the body organismal levels of organization chemical level- include atoms and molecules such as dna cellular level- different molecules combined to form cells tissue level- tissues are groups of cells that perform a certain function. Hands are distal (further away) to elbow. Elbow is proximal (closer to body) to hand. Head is superior and toes are inferior. Lateral is outer towards hands and medial is in towards body. Planes of reference sagittal plane- divides body into left and right (mid-sagittal plane divides middle) transverse plane- divides into upper and lower (cross-sectional/ horizontal plane) frontal/coronal plane- divides body into front and back. Double lined and purpose is to reduces friction and protect the viscera (organs within abdominal & thoracic cavities) Membrane consists of: parietal layer- the outer layer visceral layer- the inner layer touching viscera (organs) Serous membrane secretes lubricating uid to reduce friction.
