Objectives: define determinants of health, discuss how determinants of health impact health status of individuals and populations, identify the leading causes of death in canada, and how the determinants of health may impact them. Cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication, and does not just disappear: ex. arthritis, asthma, dementia, stress, cvd, stroke, cancer, diabetes, seizures, obesity, and oral health problems. Lalonde report established framework for key factors that seemed to determine health status: lifestyle, environment, human biology, health services. Ex. low weight at birth links w problems during adulthood. Strong relationship b/t income level of mother and baby"s birth weight. Mothers at each step up the income scale have babies w higher birth weights than those on step below. Hence problems are not just result of poor maternal nutrition and health practices associated w poverty although most serious problems occur in lowest income group.
