In the 19th century a lot of people began to examine leprosy in the middle ages. People freaked out because there was a perceived outbreak. So they looked at what the people in the middle ages did. In the 19th century they segregated them, sometimes on islands and would leave them there to die. They argued that that was what they did in the middle ages to protect society, because it could (cid:271)e (cid:272)o(cid:374)tagious, (cid:271)ut the(cid:455) did(cid:374)"t k(cid:374)o(cid:449). They justified this treatment by social darwinism. They believed inferior people were the ones who got leprosy. Your social status is based upon your genes, through evolution. The historians relied upon legal evidence that seemed to suggest that they were ostrigsized. But the author of the article criticizes the significance of this evidence and the interpretation.
