25th newgate"s last charlotte cheeseman"s boyfriend returned from the boer. War in 1902 and discovered she had been seeing another man called george woolf, a labourer aged twenty-seven of eagle wharf road, hoxton. A hostile confrontation took place between charlotte"s two lovers, resulting in each (who presumably didn"t know about the other) ending the relationship with her even though she was now carrying woolf"s baby. Some attempt at reconciliation took place when charlotte and george met at a pub on southgate road, hoxton on 25 january 1902, witnesses recalled seeing the pair drinking together. The following morning, charlotte"s body was found in a ditch on tottenham marshes between scotland green and park railway stations. She had suffered terrible injuries; her neck and face were badly mutilated. George, the main suspect, attempted to escape arrest by enlisting with the east surrey regiment at their kingston barracks.
