The nuclear weapons monitoring system revealed a very low tonal frequency, which was able to travel an incredibly long distance as the lower the frequency, the farther the waves propagate. The meteor produced infrasound that circled the world several times and was heard each time at the stations. By analyzing the sound waves from the explosion, it was estimated that the power of the explosion was nearly 500 kilotons: describe the composition of a stony iron meteorite. Stony iron meteorites are a mixture of rock and metal, and are thus much heavier than other meteorites due to the metal. They are also very dense, indicating the type of damage that can occur as they stand the best chance of surviving earth"s atmosphere. The chelyabinsk meteor fragments were found to be 90% rock and 10% metal. The scientists are interested in learning about the density of the meteor, as it is an indication of its strength.
