Document Summary

The third and ultimate premise of the auteur theory is concerned with interior meaning, the ultimate glory of the cinema as an art. Interior meanings is extrapolated from the tension between a directors personality and his material. It is ambiguous because of its embedded in the stuff of the cinema and cannot be rendered in non-cinematic terms. More of an attitude rather than an actual theory in itself. Two notions: the old idea that the director was the true creator of the film. While no one would deny the collective nature of film production, the crucial importance of the directors conception is part of the orthodox canon: applying the notion of the director as an auteur to the maligned commercial. Hollywood cinema raised a whole new series of bogeymen. Auteur was thought to be relatively free from commercial pressures of hollywood which is what allowed them to be an auteur.
