Primary metabolites carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are essential to life & they occur in the major, or primary, metabolic pathways. Secondary compounds/ metabolites chemical compounds produced by many plants and fungi along a secondary pathway. Many secondary compounds are derived from primary metabolites [l. a. c] or even a combo of them. Hydrocarbons; vary greatly in size and structure. Can be essential oils, resins, and polyterpenes: essential oils provides lavor/ aroma of many herbs/ spices; used as scents for perfumes. Classified as primary metabolites: taxol terpene from the bark of paciic yew trees; used for chemotherapy for treating ovarian and breast cancer, phenolics. Large & diverse category of compounds (that have one or more aromatic benzene rings w/ one or more oh groups) Vary from small molecules large, complex macromolecules: include lavonoids, tannins, and lignin. Phenolics interaction with oxygen in air the natural browning in cut surfaces of apples and potatoes.
