Clever hans - horse trained by owner (von osten) to prove that humans and animals have similar mental processes. Could do math, answer questions, display feats of memory, think for himself, etc. At this point in psychology, functionalism was chipping away at wundt/titchener"s psychology; was being built and maturing. In 1913, behaviorism was introduced by john b watson. Brought on as a deliberate break from both functionalism & structuralism. Sought to describe a scientific psychology that handled only observable behavioural acts that could be described in terms of stimulus and response. Rejected the concept of consciousness - believed it had no value & its existence was unprovable. Watson organized behaviourism but did not originate it; promoted ideas & issues that were already acceptable & in use. Objectivity originated from positivism with comte - valid knowledge is that which is social in nature & objectively observable.
