Schizophrenia is a thought disorder, characterized by illogical thinking, lack of reasoning, inability to recognize reality. Schizophrenia specific symptoms vary a lot between patients. Catatonic alternating periods of immobility and excited agitation, unclear movement patterns. Disorganized silly, immature emotions, disorganized behavior, receiving information, thinking, responses. Undifferentiated cases not meeting the criteria of the other subtypes. Motor symptoms are a positive symptom, but drugs have different effect on motor and positive symptoms. Negative symptoms decline in normal function; reduced speech, flat affect, loss of motivation, antisocial, anhedonia these symptoms not usually observed until later in disease progression. Cognitive symptoms impaired working memory, executive functioning, attention, inhibition. Onset and gender differences: men: symptoms observed early in life (before 36), positive symptoms easier to observe, women: symptoms observed later in life (after 36), negative symptoms easier to observe.
