Pre-attentive stage: breaking object into its features, free-floating in mental space (size, orientation, colour) Focused attention stage: free-floating features bound together using time and attention. Bind features together, sometimes we bind wrong features creating an illusory conjunction. Flash 4 shapes of different colours, add numbers on ends and ask for their sum. Common errors would swap features, not make things up. Proper feature-binding needs time (quick flash) and attention (number task) Stroop effect, reading words easy, saying colour of words harder.
