Document Summary

Chapter 3 nonassociative learning: habituation, sensitization, and familiarization. Habituation: a decrease in the strength or occurrence of a behaviour due to repeated exposure to the stimulus that produces the behaviour. Mouse hears stimulus and is startled (probe measures the jump, etc. ) In test 2, the mouse will still look but show less of a startle (not expecting it) but is less surprising in this context. After many trials, hearing the exact same buzzer, the mouse will no longer respond habituated to sound. The sound is not relevant to any danger or reward. All we can say is that the animal is no longer reacting or responding to the stimuli that it previously responded to do(cid:374)"t (cid:374)eed to i(cid:374)tuit what the mouse is thinking. E. g. , there are naturally ambient sounds in rooms that (cid:449)e"(cid:448)e ha(cid:271)ituated to (cid:894)ac, hu(cid:373)(cid:373)i(cid:374)g of (cid:449)i(cid:374)g, et(cid:272). (cid:895) Habituation is the most basic form of learning.
