Document Summary

Descartes believes that no matter what, you have to believe that 1+1=2 and you know it for sure because you go through it step by step until you reach the answer. He believes that that"s how knowledge should be, and he calls this technique foundationalism. In foundationalism, we base the system of knowledge on the foundation of certainty. It is certain because a foundation is a belief that cannot be doubted because in order to get to the foundation, Descartes doubts every belief that derives from other sources. The standard definition of knowledge is being able to give an account of what we know and why its true. Gettier objects to it as he believes that the justified true belief of knowledge is a assertion that knowledge can be conceptually analyzed as justified true belief. This is to say that the meaning of sentences can be given with necessary and sufficient conditions.
