Document Summary

Brain = physical object, living tissue, body organ. Human brain comprises 2 major sets of structures: cerebrum and cerebellum. Cerebrum (forebrain) contains left and right hemisphere: responsible for most of our conscious behaviours. Cerebellum = specialized for learning and coordinating movements. Composed of cells called neurons = control behaviour. Most connections between brain and body is through the spinal cord. Central nervous system = brain and spinal cord; mediates behaviour. Peripheral nervous system = neurons outside central nervous system; sensory and motor connections. Embodied language: hypothesis that the movements we make and the movements we perceive in others are central to communication with others. All behaviours have a cause and a function. Theory that mind is responsible for behaviour can be traced back 2000+ years to ancient greece. Mind: nonmaterial entity responsible for intelligence, attention, awareness and consciousness. Mentalism: explanation of behaviour as a function of the nonmaterial mind. Mind and body are linked (descartes proposal)
