Document Summary

How we will discuss consciousness: in a neurological way. To be awake is necessary for consciousness, but it is not the only component. You must be aware as well, since awareness is the ability to understand and reflect on your environment (and what is going on around you. ) Impaired consciousness after brain injury: acute brain injury can lead to a coma (they are not awake or aware, it is not the same as being asleep). *some people will only improve as far as a vegetative state, and will improve no further. If you are in this state for a year, the likelihood of getting out of this state is low. But it is possible to improve, in which case you would be in a minimally conscious state. These people show wakefulness (sleep/wake cycles,) and have fleeting signs of awareness. In other words, at times, but not always, they show signs of understanding their environment.
