Document Summary
They sound like they are telegraphing (morse code) Black and red patch but when they fly, they only look black. They have a zebra pattern (black and white) They are the smallest ones in this area. They have spotted outer tail feathers and a short bill which is diff. Looks like the downy but their call is much more even. It slows down but doesn"t go down in freq. It is just white and its ratio for the bill to head is a lot more 1:1 than the downy. They have a characteristic song --> even and consistent and goes on for a long time. They are a different colour as compared to other peckers. They have a whisker --> only males have it. The only woodpecker that looks like woody-wood pecker. It is big and so it is pretty loud. Sounds like the clicker but it is not even. Sounds like an owl but in the day.
