Document Summary

Overview of cellular respiration: metabolism of glucose begins with glycolysis in which glucose is converted to pyruvate. Pyruvate is oxidized to produce acetyl-coa which then enters the krebs cycle, where pyruvate is converted into a series of intermediate compounds with the result being the production of 2 atp, fadh, and nadh. Fadh and nadh enters the etc which leads to the production of more atp. The use of energy for biosynthesis, maintenance, and external work is inefficiency, leading in the production of heat (metabolic heat: metabolic rate an animal"s rate of energy consumption. It can be measured directly as the amount of heat produced, or indirectly by looking at oxygen consumption and co2 production. Measuring metabolic rate with direct calorimetry: direct calorimetry measures heat production and is a direct measurement of metabolic rate. Lavoisier"s direct calorimetry involves placing an animal within a chamber that is in turn surrounded by a larger chamber full of ice.
