Document Summary

Process, power, inaccuracy and stigma: interactionist: outcome is deviant behavior and who gets labeled. Labeling mental illness theory: scheff: mental illness as residual deviance, residual rule breaking, rules of involvement in public places. Ex: muttering, eye contact, talking to self, hygine: rules in public are often unspoken. Ex: a person brushing teeth in public viewed as insane: when in public, people are expected to be involved, when we do not know causes of behavior, we label them as insane. Ex: drinking alcohol gives us a known cause: everybody does these residual deviances. If we talk to ourselves in private, no one can label us: power of rule break, social distance to social control agents. Low powered people such as homelessness are in public more and have higher chance of getting labeled. Ex: donald trump has high power and can resist labels: tolerance of community.
