Document Summary

Social solidarity: degree to which group members share beliefs/values and intensity and frequency of their interaction. Suicide varies with the degree of integration of the social groups of which the individual forms a part (durkheim, 1951) Durkheim is often considered to be the first modern sociologist. According to durkheim, suicide rate declines and then rises as social solidarity increases. Altruistic suicide occurs when norms tightly govern behaviour. Soldiers give up their lives to protect comrades; deep sense of patriotism and comradeship. Egoistic suicide results from the poor integration of people into society because of weak social ties to others. Unemployed and unmarried more likely to commit suicide than employed and married people. Anomic suicide occurs when vague norms govern behaviour. Likely to be high among people living in a society that lacks a widely shared code of morality. Much less people attend religious services today.
