Document Summary

Ecosystem: composed of sets of things that are all related and linked together in some sort of functional way. Between these components there is a flow of material or energy. Closed systems: energy but not matter is exchanged. Isolated system: no exchanged of energy or matter (universe) Energy (capacity to work) divided in to two forms. Kinetic energy: flowing water or wind (water flowing when the dam opens) High quality energy: concentrated with high temperature heat. Low quality energy: low capacity to do work with dispersed. First law of thermodynamic (law of conservation of energy): energy is neither created nor destroyed in physical and chemical changes. Second law of thermodynamics: the entropy of the universe will never decrease will proceed towards equilibrium. Therefore, when energy is transformed from one form to another it becomes more dispersed. Decomposers: convert organic matter to inorganic matter to release nutrients (fungi and bacteria) Foodweb: represents many competing organisms and energy paths between them.
