Greek art: prothesis, ekphora, dipylon shield, maeander, dot rosettes, splinter rosettes, tree of life, terra cotta- a medium made from clay fired over a low heat and sometimes left unglazed. The figures are reserved against a painted ground and details are drawn, not engraved: relief line, bilingual- !2: white-ground- a type of ancient greek pottery in which the background colour of the object was painted with a slip that turns white in the firing process. Figures and details were added by painting on or incising into this slip. Used as a grave marker or commemorative monument: chiaroscuro- an italian word designating the contrast of dark and light in a painting, drawing, or print. !4: cella- the principal interior room at the center of a greek or roman temple within which the cult statue was usually housed. Also called the naos: opisthodomos, anta, pseudo-dipteral, pediment- a triangular gable found over major architectural element such as classical greek porticos, windows, or doors.
