Document Summary

Determination of the product of a redox reaction: reaction of bromate and hydroxylammonium ions. The experiment was performed according to the procedures given in pages 92-95 of the lab. First, the reaction between bromate and hydroxylammonium produced a clear solution. There was no evidence of gas evolution or heat. However, after the addition of hcl, the solution had produced a faint green color within seconds. Moreover, after the addition of the potassium iodide solution into the reaction flask, the solution had transitioned to a orange-yellow colour. Immediately after the solution was titrated with sodium trisulphate until it reached a faint yellow colour and the stock indicator was added. The addition of the indicator produced a dark purple substance. The end point was reached when the solution had turned into a clear substance. During the titration, the several colour changes of the solution were described the same as in the lab manual.
