Document Summary

Experiment 4: measurement of the enthalpy of reaction by calorimetry. An example of this is a chemical reaction. This lab was completed in pairs using a calorimeter where temperature changes were recorded and observed within 15 second intervals. Part a of the experiment was between hot and cold water, part b was between a strong acid hcl and a strong base naoh and part c was between ammonium chloride and a salt. For each of the experiments, the molar concentrations had to be recorded as well as their volumes. The initial temperatures were also observed and recorded using and electronic thermometer. Once both substances were mixed and the temperature began to change, the changes in temperature were recorded in 15 second intervals until 4 minutes was achieved. A blue litmus paper indicator was then placed within the solution and the colour change was noted. For detailed instructions the course manual should be referenced. 2.
