In psychology there is a need for objective methods such as collection of data to prove ideas and theories. Researchers define their observations on children by observable bahviors (things we can see and measure). Structured observation: used to study infrequent behaviors (to obtain behaviors that you usually would not normally get, the change of setting is making it more likely for a certain behavior to occur, to standardize environment for all children. Strange situation : mary ainsworth is a very important character is this type of study, observes different reactions withtin children if their caregiver is there, leaves and if a stranger approaches how the child reacts. Her strange situation study was a structured observation. Longitudinal design :studies the same participants across time as they get older. Researchers measure the behavior of interest at some early point in development and then measure the same point of interest at various intervals as the child grows.
