Document Summary

Social psychologists: study social influences that explain why the same person acts differently in different situations. Heider (1958): attribution theory: attribute the behavior to the person"s stable enduring traits (dispositional) or to the situation (situational) Peripheral route persuasion: produces fast results as people respond to incidental cues and make snap judgments. Central route persuasion: evidence & arguments that trigger favourable thoughts- people are naturally analytical or involved in the issue. Feestinger (1957): cognitive dissonance theory: we act to reduce the discomfort (dissonance) we feel when 2 of our thoughts (cognitions) are inconsistent. We cannot directly control all our feelings, but we can influence them by altering our behavior. Are in a group of 3+ people or whereeveryone else agrees. Have not made a prior commitment to any response. Know that others in the group will observe our behavior. Are from a culture that strongly encourages respect for social standards.
