When there is more than one stimulation in our receptors, vision captures our attention. People who watched videos were be fooled into misperceiving what they heard from what was spoken. Gestalt psychology: when given a cluster of sensations, the perceiver organizes them into a whole or a gestalt . Figure-ground: in order to perceive, we need to perceive a figure as being distinct from its surroundings, to the ground. Grouping: to bring order to our sensations, we logically group stimuli together-- rules of proximity, similarity, continuity, closure and connectedness. We see 3 dimensions even though the retina only has 2 dimensions. The ability to see depth is natural, The reason why we can see depth is because we have 2 eyes. Retinal disparity: the image that falls on our two eyes are not identical. Stereograms: contain two different views for the same image. The brain has to integrate 2 different images, which creates depth.
