Document Summary

Refers to a need or desire that energizes and directs a behaviour. Motivations arise form the interplay between nature (the bodily push ) and nurture (the pulls from our thought processes and culture) Ex: infants" innate reflexes for rooting and sucking: although instinct theory failed to explain most human motives, the underlying assumption that genes predispose species-typical behaviour remains as strong as ever. The idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need. A drive is an aroused/tense state related to a physical need such as hunger or thirst that is pushing us into action. Drive-reduction theory: we are motivated to reduce drives to maintain homeostasis: the maintenance of a steady internal state: the physiological aim of drive reduction is homeostasis. Ex: body"s temperature-regulation system or the regulation of any aspect of body chemistry, such as blood glucose, around a particular level.
