Brandt was a passionate proponent of world peace who was determined to normalize his country"s relations with the communist bloc, even if it meant renouncing previous goals of national uni cation and reclaiming of lost territories. Brandt"s eastern policy or ostpolitik re ected a profound shift in west german attitudes towards communist germany. The old policy of strength" aimed to weaken the eastern government, recover lost territory and reunify the german states as not working. Instead, brandt sought to normalize relations between the states.
