CHM 2123 Study Guide - Final Guide: Acyl Chloride, Kevlar, Waste Container
Document Summary
E x p er i m e n t 6: The actual synthesis done at the end of this experiment is one that may not be covered in your organic lecture course. However, the product that you will make is one that you probably encounter on a daily basis. This experiment will be conducted in five parts during the course of one laboratory period. In the last part of the experiment, you and your lab partner will get to make nylon, a synthetic polymer commonly used in clothing, stockings, and certain plastics. Before you perform the nylon synthesis, you will do some investigations that will help you learn more about the solvents needed for your reaction. Nylon is an example of a condensation polymer. It is made industrially by the reaction of adipic acid with 1,6-hexanediamine as shown in scheme 1.
